Selling Peptides on Shopify When Shopify Payments Says No
Shopify questions are really two questions: what Shopify Payments will process, and what the platform will host. Peptide sellers need to answer both, and most only ask the first.
Two different gates
A peptide store on Shopify passes through two separate gates. The first is Shopify Payments, the built-in processing: whether your category can take cards through it. The second is the platform itself: whether Shopify will host the storefront at all, governed by its Acceptable Use Policy. They fail differently. Losing the first costs you a checkout method. Losing the second costs you the store. Most advice online collapses the two, which is how sellers end up rebuilding twice.
The Shopify Payments gate
Shopify Payments runs on Stripe's processing infrastructure and publishes its own prohibited business categories in the Shopify Payments terms. Research peptides inherit the same classification that keeps them off Stripe directly: pharmaceutical-adjacent, regulatory ambiguity, elevated dispute risk. The failure mode is familiar, activation is self-serve, the store processes for a while, then a catalog review deactivates payments and pending payouts are held while reversals clear. The mechanics of those holds are covered in reserves, holds, and freezes.
The platform gate
The storefront itself sits under Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy, which restricts regulated products and reserves Shopify's right to remove stores it judges outside the lines. Where a research-use-only catalog lands under that policy is between you and Shopify: read the policy, assess your catalog honestly, and price in the risk that the host's judgment can change. That is the structural difference between renting a storefront and owning one, and it is why the durable end state for many peptide stores is self-hosted, where the only policies that bind the storefront are the ones that bind the business itself. Ownership of RUO compliance stays with you either way, covered in what research use only means for taking payments.
Checkout setups that last
If you stay on Shopify, checkout can run through providers other than Shopify Payments, including linking out to a hosted checkout; note that Shopify charges additional transaction fees when its own processing is not used, and the platform gate above still applies. If you want the gate gone, self-hosted WooCommerce is the proven home: Peer Pay's WooCommerce gateway guide walks the setup end to end. Either way, the checkout itself can be Peer Pay: checkout software, not a processor, where customers pay you directly from payment apps they already use, a cryptographic proof verifies the payment, and you settle in USDC in a wallet you control. For orders that never touch a storefront, payment links close the loop.
FAQ
Can a peptide store use Shopify Payments?
No. Shopify Payments runs on Stripe's processing infrastructure and carries its own prohibited business categories, and research peptides fall inside them. Peptide stores that activate it are typically deactivated once review classifies the catalog, with pending payouts held.
Is losing Shopify Payments the same as losing my Shopify store?
No. Shopify Payments is one payment option on the platform, and stores can run other checkout methods. The storefront itself is governed separately by Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy, which you should read and assess for your own catalog.
Can I keep my Shopify storefront and take payments another way?
Mechanically yes: stores can route checkout through other providers or link out to a hosted checkout, and Shopify charges additional transaction fees when Shopify Payments is not used. Whether your catalog complies with Shopify's platform policies is a separate question that stays yours.
Why do peptide stores move from Shopify to WooCommerce?
Self-hosted WooCommerce removes the platform gate entirely: there is no host who can deactivate the store, and you choose the checkout. Peer Pay ships a WooCommerce gateway plugin for exactly that setup, and payment links cover selling without a storefront at all.
